Information for members of the media who wish to cover the PIFI Public hearings Sept 16 – October 25, 2024

September 9, 2024 (Ottawa) – Public hearings for the Foreign Interference Commission will resume on September 16, 2024, and continue until October 25, 2024.

Factual hearings will take place from Monday, September 16 to Wednesday, October 16, 2024.  Policy consultations will take place from Monday, October 21 to Friday, October 25, 2024.  The hearings will begin each day at 9:30 and run until 4:30 pm.   The Commission will not sit on September 23, September 30 and October 14.

All of the hearings will be held at 395 Wellington in Ottawa.

Any member of the media can cover the Commission’s proceedings. However, accreditation is required for journalists who wish to access the media room at the hearing venue.  Members of the media previously accredited to cover the Commission’s public hearings will be admitted to the hearings without further accreditation, provided they still have their accreditation cards. Please contact Michael Tansey if you have misplaced your accreditation card.

Members of the media who were not previously accredited to cover the public hearings must request accreditation, which requires a letter from their employer confirming their assignment.  Details of the accreditation process are available on the Commission’s website

Broadcasters who wish to set up equipment to provide live broadcasts of the hearings should contact Michael Tansey.   Broadcasters can gain access to the hearing room on Friday September 13 to set up their equipment.

The Government of Canada created the Foreign Interference Commission in September 2023 to respond to concerns about foreign interference in the 2019 and 2021 federal elections.  The Commission released an Initial Report on May 3, 2024.  In the second stage of its work, the Commission will assess the federal government’s capacity to detect, deter, and counter foreign interference.  The Commission intends to deliver its final report, which will include findings and recommendations, by December 31, 2024.
