Commission Releases Summaries from Public Consultation Process

January 16, 2025 (Ottawa) – The Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference in Federal Electoral Processes and Democratic Institutions has released summaries of the information received through its public consultation process, which included a call for written submissions, an on-line questionnaire, and consultation meetings with members of diaspora communities.

The Commission received more than 200 written submissions from members of the public and over 600 responses to its on-line questionnaire. In addition, the Commission held 22 consultation meetings across Canada with 105 individual members of diaspora communities.

“I am delighted with the response to our public consultation process and would like to thank all of those who shared their ideas and experiences on foreign interference with the Commission,” said Commissioner Marie-Josee Hogue. “The response shows that there is great interest in the work of the Commission among Canadians and other members of the public. I look forward to releasing our final report later this month.”

The Commission has released a summary report that explores the many themes that were raised in the written submissions and questionnaire responses. In addition, the Commission has posted summaries of the consultation meetings with members of the Chinese, Eritrean, Falun Gong, Hong Kong, Iranian, Russian, Sikh, Tamil, Tibetan, Tigrayan, Ukrainian and Uyghur communities on its website.  All of the summaries are available on the Public Consultation section of the Commission’s website.

“The public input has provided invaluable contextual information to the Commission on how foreign interference has affected individuals in Canada, particularly members of our diaspora communities, who may be especially vulnerable to foreign interference,” said Commissioner Hogue.

The Government of Canada created the Foreign Interference Commission to respond to concerns about foreign interference in the 2019 and 2021 federal elections. The Commission released an initial report on May 3, 2024, and intends to deliver its final report, which will include findings and recommendations, no later than January 31, 2025.
